Moving a domain to another registrar? For .com and similar domains, unlock it and get the EPP code from your Client Area. For .uk domains, change the IPS tag to your new registrar's tag. Here's how to do both without breaking your website or email.

  • Applies to: Domain names registered with Host Dada
  • Time: about 10 minutes
  • Difficulty: Beginner

Before you start

  • Check the 60-day rule: a .com-type domain can't change registrar within 60 days of being registered or transferred. .uk domains don't have this restriction.
  • Check the registrant email: the EPP code goes to the domain owner's email address. Check it under Contact Information on the domain's page and make sure you can receive email there.
  • Plan your DNS: if your domain uses the Host Dada nameservers and you're also moving hosting or email, set up the new provider first. See the warning below.
  • Outstanding invoices: pay or cancel any unpaid renewal invoice for the domain so it doesn't hold anything up.
Keep your website and email workingTransferring the registration doesn't move your DNS, but cancelling your Host Dada hosting does remove its DNS records. If you're leaving Host Dada completely, copy your DNS records to the new provider and change the nameservers before you cancel any services.

.com, .net, .org and other generic domains

  1. Log in to the Client Area and click Domains, then click the domain name.
  2. Turn off the lock. Click Registrar Lock in the Manage menu, then click Disable Registrar Lock. The lock stops unauthorised transfers, so leave it on until you're ready to move.
  3. Get the EPP code. Click Get EPP Code. Depending on the domain, the code is either shown on screen or sent to the registrant email address.
  4. Start the transfer at your new registrar and give them the code.
  5. Approve the transfer. You may get an email asking you to confirm. Approving it speeds things up. Otherwise the transfer usually completes within 5 to 7 days.

.uk domains (.co.uk, .uk, .org.uk and others)

.uk domains don't use EPP codes. You move them by changing the IPS tag to your new registrar's tag. Ask your new registrar for their tag first.

  1. Log in to the Client Area and click Domains, then click the domain name.
  2. Click Release Domain in the Manage menu, if it's shown.
  3. Enter the New Registrar Tag exactly as your new registrar gave it, and confirm. The domain moves as soon as the new registrar accepts it, usually within a few hours.

Don't see Release Domain? Open a ticket with the domain name and the new tag and we'll change it for you.

.uk transfers change in February 2027Nominet plans to switch .uk domains to authorisation codes from 9 February 2027. After that date, you'll request a code for .uk domains in the same way as for .com. We'll update this guide when it happens.

Troubleshooting

I didn't receive the EPP code email

Check the registrant email under Contact Information and your spam folder. If the address is out of date, correct it and request the code again, or open a ticket.

My new registrar says the domain is locked

Check Registrar Lock shows as disabled, then wait 15 minutes for the registry to update and ask the new registrar to try again. A domain inside its 60-day window also shows as locked.

The new registrar rejected the .uk tag change

Some registrars must manually accept incoming .uk domains. Ask them to accept it. If it's rejected or expires, the domain stays with Host Dada and you can try again.
