How to move your website from GoDaddy to Host Dada. GoDaddy cPanel hosting and Managed WordPress sites can be copied across in full. Sites built with GoDaddy's website builder (Websites + Marketing) can't be exported, so they have to be rebuilt. This guide explains which one you have and what to do next.
Which GoDaddy product do you have?
| GoDaddy product | Can it be moved? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Web Hosting (cPanel) | Yes, in full | Copy the files and databases. See Migrate from any cPanel host |
| Managed WordPress | Yes, in full | Copy the WordPress site. See Move a WordPress site manually |
| Websites + Marketing (website builder) | No export | Rebuild the site on Host Dada, for example in WordPress, copying your text and images across |
| Professional Email or Microsoft 365 from GoDaddy | Messages yes, settings no | Create new mailboxes and copy your email. See the email section below |
To check, sign in to your GoDaddy account and open My Products. Your website will be listed under a heading such as Web Hosting, Managed WordPress or Websites + Marketing.
Before you start
- An active Host Dada hosting package. WordPress hosting suits most GoDaddy WordPress sites. Essential hosting suits other websites.
- Your GoDaddy login, plus access to any 2-step verification codes. GoDaddy asks for them before showing passwords or changing domain settings.
- Don't cancel anything at GoDaddy until the move is finished and checked.
Moving GoDaddy cPanel or WordPress hosting
- Note your DNS records. In GoDaddy, open your domain's DNS settings and write down every record, particularly MX and TXT records. You'll recreate the ones you need on Host Dada.
- Download your website files. On cPanel hosting, use cPanel's File Manager to compress
public_htmlinto a zip, then download it. On Managed WordPress, use the SFTP details from your GoDaddy dashboard with an FTP program such as FileZilla, or a WordPress migration plugin. - Export the database. Open phpMyAdmin from your GoDaddy dashboard, select your site's database, then use Export to download a
.sqlfile. - Upload and import on Host Dada. Upload the files with File Manager, create a new database and import the
.sqlfile. Full instructions: Move a WordPress site to Host Dada manually, or WP Toolkit on ProFlex. - Test before you switch. Preview the site on Host Dada. See Preview your site before changing DNS.
- Recreate your DNS records and change nameservers. Add your MX and TXT records on Host Dada (see Manage DNS records), then follow How to change nameservers at GoDaddy.
Moving from GoDaddy Websites + Marketing
GoDaddy's website builder runs only on GoDaddy's own platform, and there's no tool to download it as a working website. To move, you rebuild the site on Host Dada. Most customers use WordPress, which is included with WordPress hosting.
- Save your content. Copy the text from each page into a document, and download your images. Make a list of your pages and menu order.
- Rebuild on Host Dada. Install WordPress (see Install WordPress), pick a theme and recreate your pages. Keep the same page addresses where you can, so Google and existing links still work.
- Switch when ready. Your GoDaddy site stays live until you change the domain's DNS, so there's no rush.
Moving your GoDaddy email
- Moving to Host Dada Email: create the same mailboxes on Host Dada, then copy your messages with the Email Migration tool. See Move your email to Host Dada.
- Moving to Microsoft 365 from Host Dada: if your current email is Microsoft 365 bought from GoDaddy, GoDaddy first has to release ("defederate") your account. Microsoft explains this in its GoDaddy defederation guide. It's easy to get wrong, so we recommend opening a ticket and letting us plan it with you.
Troubleshooting
GoDaddy keeps asking for a verification code
GoDaddy protects some settings with 2-step verification. Make sure you can receive the code by text or authenticator app before you start. If you've lost access, GoDaddy's support team has to restore it.
My WordPress site shows the GoDaddy address or broken images
Managed WordPress sites sometimes use a temporary GoDaddy address. After the move, check Settings → General in WordPress. See Change your WordPress site address.
My domain is registered with GoDaddy too. Do I have to transfer it?
No. You can leave the domain registered at GoDaddy and point its nameservers to Host Dada. Transferring it is optional. See Transfer a domain to Host Dada.
