Wix doesn't let you change the nameservers of a domain bought from Wix. To use it with Host Dada you either point its website records at Host Dada from your Wix account, or transfer the domain to Host Dada so you have full control. This guide explains both.
Before you start
- You'll need your Wix account login.
- Set up your Host Dada hosting first, so there's somewhere for the domain to point. If you're moving a Wix website, read Moving from Wix: what can and can't be moved first, because Wix sites can't be exported.
- Decide what happens to your email. If you have Wix mailboxes (Google Workspace bought through Wix) you'll need to keep them or move them before you change anything.
Which option should I choose?
| Option 1: point the records | Option 2: transfer the domain | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the domain stays | Registered and renewed at Wix | Registered with Host Dada |
| Nameservers | Stay on Wix (can't be changed) | Host Dada ns1.kandekore.net to ns4.kandekore.net |
| Time | Minutes, up to 48 hours to take effect | Usually 5 to 7 days |
| Best for | A quick move of the website only | Managing website, email and DNS in one place |
Option 1: point your Wix domain at Host Dada
First get the IP address of your Host Dada hosting. If you're not sure where to find it, open a support ticket and we'll tell you. Then:
- Open Domains in Wix. Log in to Wix and go to Domains.
- Manage the DNS records. Click the Domain Actions icon next to your domain and choose Manage DNS Records.
- Update the A record. In the A (Host) section, edit the record with a blank host name (the root of your domain) so its Value is your Host Dada IP address. Delete any other A records for the root, so the old and new don't conflict.
- Update www. In the CNAME (Aliases) section, set the
wwwrecord's value to your domain name, for exampleyourdomain.co.uk. Remove any otherwwwrecord. - Save. Click Save, then Save Changes. Leave your MX and TXT records alone if you're keeping Wix email.
Wix's own instructions: Connecting a Wix domain to an external site.
Option 2: transfer the domain to Host Dada
Transferring gives you the Host Dada nameservers and full DNS control. Wix won't transfer a domain within 60 days of buying it, or within 60 days of a change to the registrant's contact details. Wix confirms that if your new host needs nameserver changes, the domain has to be transferred away (Wix: changing name servers of a Wix domain).
- Copy your DNS records. In Wix's Manage DNS Records, note every MX, TXT and CNAME record you still need, especially Wix mailbox (Google Workspace) records.
- Start the transfer at Wix. In Wix, go to Domains, click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain and choose Transfer away from Wix. Click Transfer Domain, then I Still Want to Transfer. Wix emails an authorisation (EPP) code to the domain's registrant contact. For
.ukdomains the process uses an IPS tag change instead (our tag isHOSTDADA, see Changing the IPS tag), and Wix has a separate guide for it. - Start the transfer with Host Dada. Follow Transfer a domain to Host Dada.
- Recreate your records. Wix says business email stops working after a transfer until the MX records are added again. Once the transfer completes, add your saved records in the Host Dada Control Panel, and check the nameservers below are set.
| Nameserver | Value |
|---|---|
| Nameserver 1 | ns1.kandekore.net |
| Nameserver 2 | ns2.kandekore.net |
| Nameserver 3 | ns3.kandekore.net |
| Nameserver 4 | ns4.kandekore.net |
How long it takes and how to check
Record changes at Wix usually show within a few hours, but Wix says they can take up to 48 hours. To check, use whatsmydns.net and look up the A record (Option 1) or NS record (Option 2) for your domain, or run dig A yourdomain.co.uk +short in a Terminal. See DNS propagation for more.
Troubleshooting
My site still shows the Wix site
An old A record for the root is probably still in Wix's DNS. Remove every root A record except the Host Dada one, then wait for caches to clear (up to 48 hours).
I can't find a nameserver option in Wix
That's expected: Wix doesn't allow it. Use Option 1, or transfer the domain (Option 2).
My Wix email stopped working
The MX or TXT records for Google Workspace were removed or not recreated after a transfer. Add them back exactly as they were. If you want to move the mailboxes to us, see Move your email to Host Dada.
