If your domain uses Cloudflare for DNS, you can move it to the Host Dada nameservers, ns1 to ns4.kandekore.net. How you do it depends on whether Cloudflare is only your DNS provider or is also your registrar, because domains registered with Cloudflare Registrar can't change nameservers at all.

  • Applies to: All Host Dada hosting (Essential, WordPress, Email and ProFlex)
  • Time: about 15 minutes, plus up to 48 hours to take effect
  • Difficulty: Beginner

First, check where your domain is registered

Cloudflare does two different jobs, and the steps depend on which applies to you:

  • Cloudflare is only your DNS provider. You bought the domain somewhere else (GoDaddy, 123 Reg, Namecheap and so on) and pointed it at Cloudflare's nameservers. You change the nameservers at that registrar. Follow Option A.
  • Cloudflare is your registrar. You bought or transferred the domain to Cloudflare Registrar. Cloudflare doesn't let these domains use any other nameservers. Follow Option B or Option C.

To check, sign in to the Cloudflare dashboard and look under Domain Registration (sometimes shown as Manage Domains). If your domain is listed there, Cloudflare is the registrar. You can also search for the domain on a WHOIS lookup site and check the "Registrar" line.

Before you start

  • Your domain should already be added to your Host Dada hosting package, so a DNS zone is waiting for it. See Add a website or domain to your hosting package.
  • If you're moving a website, upload it first and check it works before you switch. Preview your site before changing DNS shows you how.
  • You'll need to sign in to your Cloudflare account. Have access to both your Cloudflare dashboard and, for Option A, your registrar account.
  • The domain must be active and not expired.
Before you switch: keep your email workingWhen the nameservers change, the DNS records held at Cloudflare (every record in your Cloudflare DNS > Records page, including MX and TXT records) stop being used. Any record you haven't recreated on Host Dada stops working, and email is usually the first thing to break. Before you change anything, write down (or screenshot) every record in your current DNS, especially MX records (where your email is delivered), TXT records (SPF, DKIM and verification codes for Microsoft 365, Google and others) and any A or CNAME records for subdomains. Then recreate them in the Host Dada Control Panel. See Manage DNS records in the Host Dada Control Panel.

Host Dada nameservers

Enter all four, one per box, exactly as shown. Don't add a full stop at the end, and don't enter any IP addresses.

NameserverValue
Nameserver 1ns1.kandekore.net
Nameserver 2ns2.kandekore.net
Nameserver 3ns3.kandekore.net
Nameserver 4ns4.kandekore.net

Option A: Cloudflare is only your DNS provider

  1. Export your records. In the Cloudflare dashboard, open your domain, go to DNS > Records and use the export option to download a copy. Recreate them in the Host Dada Control Panel.
  2. Turn off DNSSEC if it's on. In Cloudflare, check DNS > Settings. If DNSSEC is enabled, disable it, then remove the DS record at your registrar. Changing nameservers with DNSSEC still active can make your domain unreachable. Wait for the DS record to clear (allow 24 hours) before the next step.
  3. Change the nameservers at your registrar. Replace the two Cloudflare nameservers (they end in ns.cloudflare.com) with the four Host Dada nameservers above. Our guides for GoDaddy, 123 Reg, Namecheap and others show where.
  4. Wait for the change to complete, then remove the site from Cloudflare. On your domain's Overview page, under Advanced Actions, choose Remove from Cloudflare. Removing it cancels any paid Cloudflare add-ons for that domain without a refund, so cancel those first.

Option B: Cloudflare is your registrar, and you keep DNS there

This is the quickest route and avoids any transfer. Leave the nameservers alone and point your records at Host Dada instead:

  1. Open a support ticket or check your welcome email for your hosting's IP address and email records.
  2. In Cloudflare, go to DNS > Records and edit the A records for your domain and www so they point to your Host Dada server.
  3. If your email is with Host Dada, set the MX record to mx.stackmail.com (priority 10) and add the SPF TXT record v=spf1 include:spf.stackmail.com a mx -all.
  4. Set the website records to DNS only (grey cloud) while you get free SSL working on Host Dada, then turn the Cloudflare proxy back on if you want it.

The downside is that you manage DNS in Cloudflare, not in the Host Dada Control Panel, so some automatic features (such as one-click email records) won't apply.

Option C: Cloudflare is your registrar, and you want Host Dada DNS

You first need to transfer the domain out of Cloudflare Registrar to another registrar, such as Host Dada. Cloudflare's rules mean a domain can't be transferred within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. In Cloudflare, unlock the domain and get the authorisation code, then start the transfer. See Transfer a domain to Host Dada. Once the transfer completes, set the Host Dada nameservers in your Client Area.

Cloudflare's own guide is Update nameservers.

How long does it take?

Your registrar usually passes the change to the domain registry within minutes. The rest of the internet then catches up as old answers expire from caches. Most visitors see the new nameservers within a few hours, but allow up to 24 to 48 hours for everyone. During that window some people may see your old site and some the new one, so leave your old hosting and email running until the change has completed.

Check the change has worked

  • Use a free public DNS checker (search for "DNS propagation checker"), choose the NS record type and enter your domain. When most locations show the kandekore.net nameservers, you're done.
  • On a Mac or Linux computer you can run dig NS yourdomain.co.uk +short in Terminal. On Windows, run nslookup -type=ns yourdomain.co.uk in Command Prompt.
  • Send a test email to your domain from a personal address to confirm mail still arrives.

Troubleshooting

Cloudflare won't let me edit the nameservers

That means Cloudflare is your registrar. Use Option B or Option C above.

My site shows "too many redirects" after the move

This happens when the Cloudflare proxy is on with SSL set to Flexible while Host Dada also forces HTTPS. Either finish moving off Cloudflare, or set Cloudflare's SSL mode to Full (strict) once free SSL is active on Host Dada.

My domain stopped resolving entirely

DNSSEC was probably still on when the nameservers changed. Remove the DS record at your registrar and the domain will start resolving again within a few hours.

My email stopped working after the change

The MX records weren't recreated on Host Dada before the switch. Add them now in the Host Dada Control Panel under Domains, copying the values from your old provider (or from your email provider's setup guide). Mail that bounced can't be recovered, but new messages will arrive once the record has spread, usually within an hour.
